Edinburgh A Large Cultural City
Home to one of the largest and most popular cultural festivals in the world, Edinburgh is a fantastic city and often cited as the heart of Scotland. As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the whole of the United Kingdom, generating over 100 million pounds a year in tourism revenue alone, Edinburgh offers many different sights and attractions to suit everyones individual wants and needs.
Fortunately, with so much to see and do, Edinburgh has fantastic transport links not only from within Scotland, but from the whole of the world. From within the United Kingdom, the main route to Edinburgh is either via along the well designed, easily accessible and heavily signposted motorway system, or by the East Coast Main Line rail route. Starting at Edinburghs Waverley train station, the East Coast Main Line allows passengers to travel direct to London Kings Cross train station, with several different stops along the way.
For visitors to Edinburgh from outside of the UK, Edinburgh Airport provides a fantastic array of routes to most countries around the world. With over 8 million passengers using the airport in 2008, it has become one of the busiest within the whole of the United Kingdom.
Once one has made route to Edinburgh and chosen where they are to stay, which in itself can pose a problem with so many hotels and varying accommodation types in all budgets, the next main point is to decide what exactly to see and do in Edinburgh. It is often said about many cities that there is something to see and do for everyone, though this is very rarely the case. With Edinburgh however, regardless of a visitors age, sex and personal interests, it is almost impossible to find a handful of different sights or attractions to fulfill their desires.
One of the more popular visitor attractions within Edinburgh is the historical aspect of the city. Edinburgh has over 4,500 grade listed buildings, almost all of which people are able to visit, or at least view, by those who wish. Furthermore, Edinburgh is renowned as being densely populated with museums, with at least 10 massively popular museums within only a few minutes driving distance of each other.
For the younger visitors to Edinburgh, or simply the young at heart visitors, there is an extensive range of pubs, bars and clubs, making for a fantastic nightlife area. With many individual popular nightlife areas, Grassmarket is regularly seen as the hub of Edinburghs nightlife, with a healthy mixture of family pubs and bouncing nightclubs.
Although it may not appeal to everyone, Edinburghs Festival is without doubt one of the Citys most popular and well known attractions. Taking place in August every year, the festival title is an umbrella term, encompassing a variety of smaller festivals underneath it. With the comedy festival being the most favoured part of the festival, it features everything from poetry to local art and culture to modern magic and is the perfect representation of Edinburgh itself, fun, popular and aiming to please all who visit.
